The significance of the body mass indey (BMI) is controversially seen in circles of experts. However it belongs to the most important standard key figures and can give a rough guide value for the assessment of body weight. WHtR (Waist to Height Ratio)- calculator

Recent studies have shown that the ratio between waist circumference and body height is a good indicator, to evaluate health risks in connection with obesity.

The WHtR (unlike the BMI) takes the fat distribution of the body into account. Visceral fat, unlike other fat depots, is more prone to affect health badly, as it is connected with fatty degeneration of the inner organs. Fatty degeneration of the inner organs significantly increases the probability of diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders or stroke.

Therefore the waist circumference in combination with the body height is easy to establish and a meaningful estimate for health risks.

Measuring instructions: The waist circumference should preferably be measured when you have an empty stomach and with undressed upper body. While standing place the measuring tape just above the belly button around your stomach. If there is a slight stomach, the circumference should be measured at the widest place. Your position should be relaxed and your breathing neutral. The result should be rounded up.

Insulin resistance analyses

Since 1985 the term “insulin resistance” is defined as the reduced effect of the endogenous insulin onto muscle, fat tissue and liver.

Multiple methods have been developed, to detect insulin resistance. The most scientific method is the complex euglycaemic hyperinsulinaemic clamp-test, which is only used for scientific purposes.

The result shown here is based on the analysis after Standl/Biermann developed by the Institute of Diabetes Research in Munich, which is preferred in everyday clinical practice.
